Potl

The Penguin on the left was conceived a number of years ago as a screen print and is just now realizing it's full potential as a traditional 2d animation.

This short is a traditional 2D animation based on a silk screen I did about 10 years ago for a silk screening class while getting my BFA at the University of North Texas. The composition was of a group of emperor penguins on an ice flow made up of many translucent layers of blue to green. The penguin on the far right had a gun, cigarette and some mirrored shades, while the penguin on the far left was shot dead, a trail of blood flowing into the sea. This short will be just as gory but it will be presented in a tasteful manner. The original screen print was a simple political statement that disappears taken to a new temporal context. The animation would be more of an environmental statement about encroachment and unforeseen consequences of the corruption. Our protagonist, the penguin on the left, is a small penguin shunted to the side and at the mercy of the world. When he comes in contact with man his life and environment are forever altered. Potl (penguin on the left) is face with the conflict of self, does he dare inspect the objects left behind? Once he inspects the gifts of man does he assimilate into that world of human power? You bet he does!

Our charming ice breaker is modeled after the Russian ship Yamil. There are few if any American ice breakers left in service and the actions of our friend, the doomed shipmate, is in no way meant to disparage the noble Russian people. The actions are more reminiscent of the, dare I say, hicks I grew up around in east Texas. They liked to bring there guns with them in case something needed shootin?. Anyway, it's more of a metaphor for the superiority complex that mankind in general suffers from.
